How to Make the Perfect Hard Boiled Egg
By barbergirl28
I pride myself in the ability to cook. Yet, for some odd reason, I can never for the life of me figure out how to hard boil an egg. It seems like it should be easy. I have been cooking for years. I own so many cookbooks that even the library is jealous. I can make gourmet type meals without problems; I can make homemade pastries and cookies that melt in your mouth; I can even make a killer breakfast!
But, make a hard boiled egg… I shiver at the horror!
(I will pause for a brief second while you collect yourself after laughing so hard!)

Okay, now that you have regained your composure... we will get back to business!
It's not a tumor
The Yolks on You!
Every single time I try to make a hard boiled egg, I always have to ask someone how to do it. The problem is… everybody has a different recipe. They all claim it works perfectly. And I have tried each and every single one of them. Then I realize when I go to eat the hard boiled egg - the yolk is green, the white stuff was discarded with the shell cause it didn’t peel easily, or, the worse fate ever… I crack the hard boiled egg yet it was only cooked enough to harden up the white part and the yolk comes pouring out.
Yes, these are true stories.
Finally, I have figured out the easiest, no fail hard boiled egg recipe. Even a person like me, who has been frightened away from my cracked up hard boiled egg attempts, can make the perfect hard boiled eggs.
Eggstra Easy Recipe
Ingredients:
- Medium sized pot
- Several eggs
- Ice
- Big bowl
- Paper towel
- Salt
Instructions:
- Grab a medium sized pot (or larger depending on how many eggs you plan on making). Fill the pot with water (enough that the eggs will have plenty of room when set into the water). Set on stove and wait for water to boil.
- Gather your eggs. (Store bought is preferred since this is easiest, but if you live on a chicken farm, this method should work for those eggs as well!)
- Gently place your eggs in the boiling water. Time for 12 minutes.
- While you wait, fill a large bowl with ice and cold water. This will serve as your ice bath for the eggs. Once the timer dings, shut off the stove and transfer the eggs from the boiling water into the ice bath. Allow eggs to cool.
- Place a paper towel on the counter, crack the egg and peel. Rinse the peeled egg off and garnish with a few dashes of salt.
Voila! You have now cooked the perfect hard boiled egg! Notice how the egg is nice and yellow. Notice how easily the shell can be cracked and discarded.
Best uses for Hard Boiled Eggs
Here are a few of my own personal suggestions on how to use hard boiled eggs.
- Peel them and eat them. Simple yet so satisfying. It is an easy breakfast that is packed full of protein. It is relatively easy to store and you can make them the night before so you have breakfast on hand.
- Decorate them. It doesn't need to be easter. Notice how I put a smiley face on my perfect hard boiled egg. It was fun and took very little time to do.
- Make Deviled Eggs. After all, who doesn't like a good deviled egg. Why do you need to wait for the next social gathering to have one. Now that you can easily make hard boiled eggs, you can make Deviled Eggs anytime you want!
- Dice them up and throw them in a salad. It is a great source of protein and adds a little more kick to that regular old boring sald. With some cheese, a few pieces of ham and your favorite dressing, this will make a great meal.
- Make egg salad sandwiches. As I child I used ot hate when my mom made egg salad sandwiches, but now that I am older I find them very tasty. Toast up some bread and slather it on and Yummo!
- Finally - trick others who live in the same household. Hard boil all the eggs in the refrigerator and place them back into the original container. The next day, suggest eggs for breakfast and whine until they volunteer to cook them. Watch as they shake their head when they realize the eggs are all hard boiled. Note: This trick will work if the person is not paying attention, otherwise there is a distinct difference between a hard boiled egg and a raw egg. The raw egg will keep spinning due to the yolk in the middle. Just wanted to give you a heads up in case someone tries to trick you!

Eggcelent Hard Boiled Eggs
I love hard boiled eggs, but my constant failures often made me shy away from making them. Usually, I would pass the responsibility off to someone else and I NEVER volunteered to bring Deviled Eggs to any social gatherings (even though I usually polished off at least 4 myself!)
Yet now, my hard boiled eggs are no longer a recipe for disaster. In fact, I have been making them almost weekly once I discovered the right way to do it that actually works. Each time I make them, I am still in awe at how easy it is, how delicious the eggs taste, how yellow the yolk is, and more importantly, how easy the egg peels. Finally, I get to eat a hard boiled egg that is more than just the yolk (since I always lost the white stuff upon peeling.)
I hope this easy recipe will help you to make the perfect hard boiled egg. If I said I was sharing it so you could get over your egg frustrations I would be lying. I did however want to make sure this recipe was found online so if I ever forgot how to make them again, I could easily reference back.
So, now that you have gotten all the Eggstra details on how to make Eggcelent hard boiled eggs… get cracking and go make some eggs!

I always hard boil my eggs for 10 minutes. See your right..everyone has their own version. Your hub was fun... :0
I once had a big egg mishap following another persons suggestion. They suggested putting the eggs in the water and boiling them. Once the water boils it should be done. I was already to crack into one of those wonderful hard boiled eggs... it was still raw. I should have just went with scrambled instead! :)
I always add salt to the boiling water. My mom always told me to do this. The egg shells seem to peel easier without sticking to boiled egg.
Now that I think about it.... I added salt as well, but it was more because using salt helps make the water boil faster and I am impatient... thanks for the great tip!
I love hard boiled eggs - but seem to always either dry them out or like you said, they are raw. Even still - the dry ones make great deviled eggs and my little devils love them!
I have to say though - if I mentioned making eggs - I'd be the one making them! I could whine all day:-). Up/useful/funny! I can't wait to try this fool proof recipe!
I'm comparing the eggs to my "versatile potato" hub! They are! You can do so many things with them. I miss eggs. I wish they liked me back lol. I'm afraid to try one more time! But this hub is most definitely pushing me into another try!
OH I always heard you add salt to the water but don't set them in until the water is already boiling, then count the 3 minutes. My one extra thing always has worked so far lol.
@RealHousewife - let me know how this recipe for you works. I have done it several times over the past month and it has been fail proof. The only problem I had is I dropped one of the eggs in the boiling water which caused the tumor head looking egg.
@Katherella - Eggs do have a variety of different methods. Very versatile. Hopefully if you do give the eggs another try they finally like you! :)
You made me laugh again! I didn't think a how to boil an egg article could do it, but when I saw your egg with the tumor, I just had to laugh!
What can I say... even hard boiled eggs can be funny. I loved the tumor egg... you should have seen it when I was saying "It's not a tumor!" all over the house in my best Arnold Schwarzennager voice!!! Ha ha - if only we could have voice prompts. I guess people will just need to imagine it! LOL
Ok well I'm going to and I'll bet you a dozen eggs I can still mess this up:-)
I bet you the dozen that you will have to give me that you won't... ha ha ;)
Ok well here it goes again, I mean I can't not make deviled eggs on Easter! So glad you have this hub again!
11:19 am - eggs are boiling! Lol
Hey - have a happy Easter with the family today! I'm always so excited before the Easter egg hunt, I can push those little kids out of the way and get most of those dam eggs!
My mother in law made deviled eggs out of the ones that were actually colored for Easter... a little sacreligious (however you spell that word) I hope those eggs turned out splendifidious for you!
Hope your farmily had a great Easter and I hope you beat all those kids to those darn eggs on the hunt! After all, chocolate might be at stake her! LOL
It was fun - well ok after I took the Valium:) then - totally tolerable!
Obviously I wasn't running anywhere - so I just let the kids have the eggs this year! Haha!
Ha ha - Easter and Valium - the perfect combination to surviving a bunch of mad kids running after eggs... lol... but at least the kids got to get some this year with you not participating! LOL
Yeah I stole them as soon as they went to sleep. Dumb kids. Ok that's too much - just kidding:)! Lol!
You are a better person then I... I took their candy while they watched. Can't help it. I am so addicted to peeps! LOL
Yeah I'm better because I lie about it:) I see your point! LMAO
Ha ha ha - and then you have the discounted Easter Egg candy at the stores afterwards... better get my workout on! Yikes!
I used this for Easter this year... it really did work like a charm! I have never had eggs peel easier! I was so happy with it that I decided I was going to boil eggs more often. That was the second time I boiled eggs in almost 4 years... obviously I am not very comfortable doing so. You made it nice and easy though!
@Myth - YOu know it just amazes me at how many people can't make hard boiled eggs... myself included. Since my FIL is the one that taught me how to do this... I have no issues. However, I will admit I have to refer to this hub every single time I try to make them! LOL

You "crack" me up! Oh, I wish I had of known you were going to write this! I seen the funniest picture, and reminded me of me and my friends actually making bunches with faces. Anyway all of these are normal with faces, and the broken one is made to look like he threw up! It's so funny! For some reason I don't know why, but the last 2 times I've eaten an egg I get very sick, like I turned allergic to them. But I love them, and I find everyone I know has a different recipe for devil eggs. But I always made an extra one as a tester to know for me! And peeling them under running water, water goes under that thin piece between the egg & shell if you've not tried that it's great! :)
