Linking hubs to your hubs - Why it is important
67
Giving out personal recommendations
When reading a hub, often times I notice some have links and some do not. Now I am not talking about the links to other sites or the links to those oh so attempting Google Ads, I am talking about links that will lead you to another great read.
Some people chose not to use the linking capsule to suggest other hubs to their readers. The question I ask is why?
The only reason I can come up with for not using links is…
- A hubber is new to the site and is unaware of how to use this type of capsule.
- Laziness. (Not to offend anybody!) But after putting in all the work to get your text perfect and the pictures found and whatever else you put in, who really wants to spend more time looking for other hubs that will accent your hub. You just want to hit publish now. (I can’t say I blame you!)
Links, Links, Links
Adding links to your hubs is a great way to add to you Hubkarma. It is a great way to improve the overall experience on Hubpages, whether it is for the regulars or just happening across a hub from a Google search engine.
According to the Hubpages FAQ, “HubKarma is a score that reflects the degree to which you link to others’ hubs.” You can easily use the link suggestion tool to also help link to others hubs. This score, while rated from a 0-100 scale, is also influential on your overall Hubscore.
So other than the fact that it sounds appealing to have good Hubkarma, why else would a writer want to use those handy link capsules? Cause honestly, the Hubkarma probably means very little. Mine really hasn’t changed since I have started writing on here. Therefore, it is really just a number. So why should we be concerned. Why should we share other writer’s hubs with our audience?
Examples of hubbers who have linked to others...
My Reasons
1. What comes around goes around. To get all those wonderful backlinks, why should you be the only one doing the work? How many countless hours do you spend going to how many countless other websites to make sure there is as many links to your story as possible? Not saying you should stop doing that and leave the work to everybody else. But, if you have other people linking to your stuff as well, you will eventually be recognized by that giant monster Google! The results… more people will find your work.
Now remember, this isn’t all about you. This is about your fellow writers and supporting them. Basically, if you are willing to link to their stuff, they are more likely to think about you the next time they are linking in their hub. Now this isn’t always going to work. You may not know if others are linking your stuff. But, in the end, you know you have helped support a fellow writer. That is really what matters.
2. It is the greatest compliment you can pay to a writer. This is not a money making scheme. It really is just about complimenting your fellow writers. If you link to their stories and they you have recommended them, they will be humbled and thankful.
Personally, if I see my stuff linked on other people’s work, I feel honored they held me in such high regard. That they truly appreciated what I wrote. It makes me feel like these countless hours I have spent writing and working on publishing my work online really hasn’t been in vain. I know someone out there truly has appreciated my work.
3. It is like hub hopping… only you have given them a personal recommendation. Many of us occasionally use the hub hopping tool. It is a discovery tool that allows a hubber to jump from one hub to another, usually in the area of their interest. Yet, what you come across is usually a surprise.
When you put links into your hubs, this serves as another form of hub hopping. Only now it is more like a personal recommendation. If the hub you recommended also has links, the hubber can almost infinitely hop, knowing they will be exposed to some great reading material recommended by fellow hubbers.
4. Do it for yourself. As time goes on, some of your hubs will lower in score. Is it because it isn’t worth the read. Absolutely not! But, it might be because the topic isn’t something people normally search for on Google. Therefore, by linking your hubs back to your other hubs, this will help bring the hub back into people’s sights again. This is a great way to expose your other work to potential readers.

While linking is a great way to give your reader’s recommendations to lead them to some of your favorite writers and their works of art, it is also a great way to bring attention to some of your older work. The key is to not over do it. Linking should be a way to enhance the overall hub experience, but it shouldn’t be about taking over your entire hub with nothing but links.
I have seen it where on the bottom of a hub there is almost more links then there is actual written words in the hub. It seems every single hub ever written was linked on the bottom. While this may get some people to read the links, if they are anything like me, the will skip over the entire section. Using the link capsule should allow you to select a few great pieces that nicely add to the layout of your hub. I usually try to link to a few of my fellow hubber’s hubs and a few of my own pieces as well.
My recommendation is to carefully place links where it will appeal to the reader. This will make them more likely to click on the link, since they won’t be drowning in an over recommendation of other things to check out. I usually like to find hubs that relate to my articles. If I write poetry, I like to link other pieces of well written poetry. If I write something more serious, the same principles apply. If I write something humorous, I try to find other humorous hubs to link to.
So, now that you know how important it is to add links to your hubs, what are you waiting for? Get that hub going and give out some great recommendations to your readers. Not only will they be thankful for some great suggestions, but you will be giving out the biggest compliment to your fellow writers.

Thanks for the reminder. I do this and then become slack. Now I will go back and add some links tonight. You rock! Can I link to THAT?
Hey B.G.
I didn't even know what a link was until about my 20th hub. I was the dumbest of the dumb.
Good hub girl. Up, and useful!
jim
Go check out my last hub on "Trump This Trumped." A fellow hubber got a video out that's getting everyone excited, but it's bogus. I wrote this hub to keep people from getting sucked in.

Voted up and awesome. We do reap what we sow!!! God Bless you for witing this. It is not all about us. Our works for others with be Blessed!! Sending a hug of love and linking this! ( - ;
I do links in every one of my hubs, for both me and others. I generally do them on a similar topic to increase the level of info on that topic.
Is there any notice if other hubbers link to your hubs? I haven't noticed if anything is happening with mine. Just curious.
I'm sorry, but there are automatically two other hubs I MUST read that you've linked to in this hub just because I can't look past the titles. lol See it works!
This is great BBG! I have tried to use them a couple of times. It worked on some and I couldn't get it to work other times. One of my computers works well to upload things, the other computer acts so stange since we upgraded it - I can't figure it out. My iPad - doesn't mesh well with hub and trying to write or edit - only good for reading. So - with all those things I get frustrated and don't know if it's me, hub or the computer?
I have been following you since day 1 because you are a great teacher as well as a great writer. I knew I could learn from you. I have too so I'll pat myself on the back for the good instincts:)! Now, I've been slowing down a lot - trying to figure out how to improve before I hit the publish button! I'm trying to use the links too - it's more time consuming but worth it. It's really hard for me though - I am not the greatest with computers so I'm slow. Also - is there an etiquette to linking to others? I mean - should you ask first? It feels a little weird just hooking up to a hub without knowing if the author might be embarrassed because maybe you aren't the best writer in their mind? Or maybe they might feel like your hijacking their hub in a way. I always try to stand back and see how it works vut no one has addressed this before.
Thanks - as always - you have been such a great inspiration to me BBG!
My experience shows that linking hubs of other hubbers divert traffic from your hub to others. Linking your own hubs of similar nature is beneficial. I am not against lining hubs of other hubbers but others should also reciprocate in the same manner. Anyways, you have done justice to the topic providing minute details of usefulness of linking self & others' hubs.
You are awesome BBG - and I'm sure you have helped many more people than you know with your articles. Now don't even say the word tracker! I'm thinking what? They have that? What does it look like? Is this a tangible? Haha! Way ahead of me. Now URL I understand, I have three of them;)
Lol! I am working on something now - it's going to be a surprise BBG:)!
BBG...you are talking about the suggest links that appears when I publish a new hub right? If so, I use that in every hub...is there other things I should be doing to? thanks for this great hub. I have bookmarked it and will reread.
I could think of worser tastes to associate:)! Lol!
Ya - I think you would have a great hub with that idea! Seriously, people who are newer need your super hero help! Put that cape on girl!
I'm a little jealous about the burn - I mean we are drowning here. It just won't stop raining. We had more tornadoes here again! The airport got wiped out! Tractor trailers were blown across the highways - about 20 homes were demolished! Crazy! I want sun! Sun, sun, sun!
If it doesn't - I'll meet you by the flip flops:)!
Make more better pudding:)
Link building is more than helpful.
I found this awesome article by clicking the link at the bottom of the super-terrific hub written by Realhousewife.
Excellent article. I've been going back through my articles and adding links, but I think I'm going to have to go back and add the links at the bottom as well as the ones throughout the article. I just don't see that the blue links throughout the article would be as enticing for people to click on as a link with the description at the bottom of the article!
You've given me something to think about!! (my mind was a blank only moments ago)
Lots of useful info packed in here! I'm new to all these stuff so any information on linking is appreciated. Yours is really thorough. Great insights, great info, great hub. It really deserves a Vote up.
Ooh wait until you see how fancy I am getting now BBG! I spent hours yesterday practicing my skills! I've been a good student and you're a great teacher. I think you will be impressed! I am so excited!
Come on Eli :-) we know you are a much bigger man than most to begin with. So just do what the lady says! Haha!
Well how bad could it be? I'm sure under roo's doesn't come in his size! I can't wait to see this one!
Oh I know what you mean! I ant hold a camera still - Dave takes the photos for me or I use him for the prop. It's for a good cause - usually dinner!
Linking is very very important, Nice hub.
Thanks for the useful article. I linked few other hubs and my Hub Karma increased to 74.
Do you think they really knew what they were enlisting for?
Better yet, I think link to one's own hub is even better. And instead of in the Link capsule, do the link in the sentences itself (within context of course).
Rut ro! You know we won't make any money until we are dead! Well unless you cut your ear off and send it to Eli - which means you'd just be wasting postage since you live together. Waste not want not!
Yeah - sad. Sad. Sad.
I do believe this and I had proven for myself. This way made my HubKarma score always climb up. Thanks for writing this. Rated up!

People will be digging through their garbage cans hoping to get a piece of your hair or scrap of clothing!
Now I'd love to sea that on the auction block!
I'll be sitting in the audience like rain man repeating "MAKE MORE BETTER PUDDING!"
I'm terrible - right now - Dave is snoring like a big baby and I'm eating a baby Ruth and trying to find sites I can use cartoons from:) I found a good one it's "on the mark" don't know if you've seen that one?
I wish I could nap! I can be tired but am a terrible day sleeper. I did get a bunch done as far as organizing things and looking up some random indo I'm always working on two or three things at a time.
I thought about taking a photo of the Baby Ruth and sharing it on FB;)
Oh I can not wait! Haha! Are you going to get all arrogant and stuff? I hope so! Shake what your momma gave ya:)!
I think it will make them HAVE to see....! I had to! My eyebrows were already up!
Nice writing Barber girl, my hub karma has maxed at around 65 and I regularly link my hubs to others. I think getting the score above this requires something extra.... just not sure what yet! Anyway overall hubscore fluctuates directly with the amount of time and work you spend on hubpages. Competitiom as well but mainly work. All hubs I continue to update are the ones that perform best as well as the ones that have no competition. In fact I have a few hubs that get google clicks with no links to them at all!!
I must confess that I am one of the computer 101 nerds. I am way behind in the use of computers but you taught me something useful. I appreciate it.
Firstly, the keywords. O a second place: linkbuilding and updating hubs.
I get slack with my hubs and hubpages knows it! They seem to know how often and how active I am on here and score me accordingly, But yes my hubs with links do the best.
Yeah it a really good hub, I am a backlinker for webmasters through one of my websites and understand the importance of this, although the best places for links are different everyday and links I thought were valuable have not been found and less valuable links have been indexed for high competition keywords, I understand PR but I think it is over rated and no-follow and do-follow is also over rated. I think a well rounded link wheel for any webpage is the best option, many links from many RELEVANT sources, again great hub keep writing. 99 hubscore thats gotta be painful :) also you have away instead of a way in this hub, can you find it? it's in don't overdo it paragraph.
Not really as I usually use a lot of my link juice to link to clients relative websites.
Only a few of these links I use personally and I do not make much on hubpages but I get 50-100 visitors everyday to my blogs from here. And as you know sometimes when my score drops the links go no-follow. I am going to reach 100 hubs then keep re writing to boost the scores all above 80, this goal I want to achieve in the next month or so.
I think the hubpage traffic itself is worth more than the links but it all helps.
I think backlinking is being moderated by search much more and relevancy and quality not quantity are the way to go. Linking is a art not an exact science, that is unless google wants to tell everyone how to spam the search.
Good luck with hitting the 100 again.
Thanks for all your tips and once again...great HUB
Ok please tell me what back linking is!
OOoOOOoooohhhhh I didn't know you could do that! It's allowed and you just plunk your URL down anywhere or is there a special big Internet place with random URL's?! Just kidding! But really I didn't know so thank you I hope I can find somewhere to try it!
Wow! Thanks! I'm doing odds and ends today - trying to organize my email and accounts (on my new butt kicking laptop) so I'll keep those and check them out. I think hub is enough for me right now but I'm really interested into planning for later.
I can also see how other people use this tool and try to figure it out for hub. I learn a ton by paying attention to other hubbers and watching how you do things. I think I have a good hub score in part because I really take my time scrutinizing other hubbers work. I didn't know a fraction of your score is dependent upon how much you really read of those that you follow. I read almost everything of everyone I follow - I won't lie there are a few I'm not sure why I'm following:( that's why I don't care if I gain a huge following - it doesn't seem to matter for me. I truly want to learn how to write better - so my goal was to follow people who are much better than I am and it's working for me!
I know! If I could save time in a bottle:)! I want to do so much more in my life than I will ever have time for - it's why I'm always in a hurry!
Also - hub is weird kind of because you can read everyone's things but sometimes I have a question and I feel really bad expecting someone to take time out of their day to help me. There is sometimes no other method to the madness though - like asking about etiquette and so forth - so thank you for letting me pick your brain so often!
I cant do that either - I do often have several screamers running around here so I do best to read during the day or right after dinner or before bed but after the heathens have gone to bed too!\
Yesterday - I cleaned all day so I could play all day today!
I nooooooo! I just can't see it getting boring either!
Some really useful info here. I am new to the Hubpages community, but I feel a lot better prepared after reading your Hub. I will make sure to include the link module. I think that it is a brillant idea. Thanks again.
I hide the iPad or leave it upstairs so I can't hear the ding sometimes!
You know what - I would not recommend the iPad over the laptop I just got. The iPad was around 800 - for the wifi + 3G and more memory. It is limited - it is nothing more than a toy really. No word processor - no flash player - it has limitations. You can't write a hub or even edit one with iPad!
The HP laptop with quad processors and everything - love it - just $379! It does everything - except I still haven't figured out what program to load for video! I'm working on it!
I hate to steer you clear though if you'd love it. I bought one for Dave for his birthday (he was dumb founded and couldn't figure out how I got that much money without him knowing!) he uses his everyday and couldn't live without it. He uses his email to receive orders while he is in the court houses already doing research. If he's there and we get another order for that county it can save a ton on gas & time. The phone email was useless because it was too small. He just got an App so now he can actually control his home computer from remote locations through the iPad! For him - it's worth every penny! You are a writer though - so I wouldn't think it would be as good for you.
Mine was a gift for my birthday from - who else? - David J! But he loved it so much he used it all the time - so I bought him his own for his birthday!
Well you're onto something here - for Dave's birthday - I buy myself a really hot looking new outfit every year - and surprise him! I mean - he wants ME to look good right? Lol! Go ahead - justify it girl!
Right?! That's what I'm talking about! You know he's a trunk junky:)! Lol!
We had a blast with it! Such a ridiculous thing! Dave said if we went out and I got tired of wearing it I could just go into the bathroom and take my butt off and throw it away. Then we laughed about the surprise the person who might find it would get! LOL
Like what is that??!!
Baby got back to backless baby!
Looks aren't everything!
How do you change the color of the font? I could use that tip right about now:)
Oh I just realized I'm not on the tip hub here:)
Oh - you hyperlinked the hub - fancy!
Thanks!
I'm sayin!
A very useful hub. I'm still pretty new to hubpages so still figuring out how to use links and when is best to use them. Thanks for writing such a useful, readable and informative hub
because hub gives me a link like when i post this url www.gamesfornokia.co.cc this gives a link to this url and link makes page rank
I totally agree with you Barbergirl. Linking other posts with similar topic is a means to tribute the effort put in by other writers as well as building a chain of mutual sponsorship. If I link one of your hubs in my hub, you would feel obliged to look into my hubs to make sure you do the same next time you post a hub. Liked your idea and the response is overwhelming which means all are up for this. Thanks. Keep writing.
Great hub. Voted useful.
I link another's hub to mine because I find them related to what I have written.God bless.
....as long as you always allow me to 'link' up with you - that is all that matters for the epi-man - and once in awhile you come over and link up with me - lol lol- I sincerely hope you've had a safe happy and productive summer and that you are now enjoying fall.

I'm a newbie to hubbing and will be sure to take your advice.
Nice hub, barbergirl. Fine tips. I have been linking to others' hubs from within my hub using the link capsule and the suggest links button too, ever since I came to know about the benefits. I find that the some hubbers whom you are linking to do leave a link to your hub as well.
Thanks for reminding.
Voted up and useful.
Good content. I enjoyed the Hub's information. Nicely done.
We are all a team. It is great how people work together on hubpages and offer so much information. Thanks for Sharing
I have learned much from this article -- and from some of the comments. Thank you.
Good advice, especially the part about linking to own hub. I try to link to my older hubs within the text of my paragraphs, in addition to putting in a link module at the bottom. Sometimes I even put an RSS feed module at the bottom listing my latest hubs.
Great reminder! I link to my own hubs that relate and occasionally to others' hubs. I think I could do more linking to others. Useful, funny, interesting hub. Voted up!
P.S. I actually clicked on your hub from a link on RealHouseWife's hub. So, it DOES work! The title caught my eye!
Stacy...
I love putting in links to other Hubs/Hubbers...often times I will include the (unwary) Hubber in a story just so I can have the privileged. I understand about the lazy thing...because...you know...I'm lazy...
Thanks,
Thomas
Excellent hub topic! What goes around comes around. I believe the support Hubbers have for each other is what makes the site successful and a blessing to be a part of. Voted up, awesome, and sharing.
I'm a big fan of linking other hubs that compliment a hub. It makes a hub look finished in addition to supporting a fellow hubber. Useful hub!!
I agree BBG. Know and respect:)
Hey Stacy, it is great to remind people that they should link up to other hubs, either their own or other hubs(not their own). The internal linking strategy should be used by anyone and everyone, so they can create as much link juice as possible. It's always good to link to other relevant or related hubs, not only for HubKarma reasons, but to give the reader a variety. You can even link to hubs that have a difference of opinion on the same topic, so your readers gets a different point of view.
Hubberscore/authorscore isn't something people should worry about because it actually isn't related to earnings. And, HubPages' built-in system keeps hubberscore/authorscore high enough so that it doesn't affect one's earnings. Good hub! :) Voted up! :)
barbergirl28 - This is an excellent hub. Camaraderie is an important treasure and tool within our HubPages community. If we take into consideration various sites across the web you will most certainly find (and expect) to see links to related topics and articles. It builds a professional network of readers and writers. Internet users want resources and we should supply them with such. As time passes I am working on ways to continuously improve my hubs with a variety of text boxes, graphics and features. On the next round of 'spring cleaning' of my hubs I'll be sure to review and revise my suggested links as well.
Thanks for the great tips! Marisa/MissOlive
voted up, across and sharing! :)
I've had a couple of links to other Hubbers that were "broken". Their Hub was unpublished or something. That's a pain. Also, some Hubbers overdo their own links. I was HubHopping one day, and a poet back linked to his own poetry 20 times in a poem of about 500 words. That's a little much, don't you think?
Uh-oh...am I suppose to be telling people when I link them? I like it to be a surprise is what I am saying.
Worried in Reno.
Thomas
This is something every hubber should do automatically -- find ways their current hubs relate to their previous ones. Voting this Up and Useful.
Great information Barbergirl. It took me some time to grab this concept as a newbie, but now that I am using it it helps immensley. This is a vital process. Thanks for a great explanation.
As a newbie, I've been reluctant to post to other hub's because I didn't know the propert etiquette. Should you message them and ask if it's okay? Or is it generally seen as such a positive that linking without asking is fine?
Thanks!
Great advice, especially for new hubbers. I often forget to use the linking tool myself, although I will sometimes mention other hubbers. At the moments, I'm aiming for that big 100 hubs, but once I get there, it is my plan to review and overall all my hubs.
SOCIALLY SHARED, up and useful.
Nice tips to all internet marketing peoples. It will really improve my some SEO knowledge.
Thanks for sharing great Article.
Great hub! It's always great to be reminded - for new and older hubbers alike - of how we can help support each other and what makes a great overall hub. Voted up, useful and SHARED.
I try to link Hubs of fellow Hubbers as much as possible and often let them know I used their work to promote a certain topic.
I do this without expecting them to do the same, though everyone would like some support. I almost always share Hubs with fellow Hubbers and not expect anything back.
Sharing, linking or promoting Hubs of your fellow Hubbers is a great thing to do but the expectation that comes with it often, should be less important I'd say.
The feeling of helping someone out is good enough for me:-)
Voted up, shared and away of course!
It is nice when I find a fellow hubber who has written an article on a similar subject or one that would enhance the hub that I have written. Sometimes I inform them and sometimes not. Most of the time it is hubbers that I know and ones that reciprocate by commenting when I comment on their hubs. HubLove! Excellent hub you've written for newbies and a good reminder for others who have been hubbing a while.
This is good information. I have just started going back through my hubs and learning to do this. There are some very interesting hubs that I have come across too. I have also come across some that the hubbers are no longer active so I don't link those but some of the hubs are great reading.
Barbergirl, this is useful hub. I agree linking to others' hubs does help in getting traffic. I do it most of the time. I also try and link my related hubs together as this makes it easy for the reader to get to your other hubs if they wish to.
Thanks for sharing a good tip.
Voted up and useful.
I'm SHARING this.

I have been part of the community for a couple years now, and there are many things I am not aware of, don't know how to do or whatever. I have definately bookmarked this one for future reference. Voted up and quite useful. I find it sometimes less complicated to follow the instructions etc from other Hubbers. Thanks a lot
